Transition
Enrolling at Karonga School
Students joining Karonga School are supported through a thoughtful and individualised transition process, which may include:
· Visits to their current educational setting, where possible
· Family meetings and school tours, with opportunities for prospective students to explore classrooms or join a peer group
· Transition packs containing information and visual supports to help students become familiar with the school environment and routines
These processes are designed to build familiarity, reduce anxiety, and support a smooth and positive start to school life at Karonga.
Programs and Reports
Student reports are issued twice per year, in Terms 2 and 4, in line with public school expectations. Reports are informed by data, negotiated SMART goals, and reflect the breadth of learning opportunities provided.
· In Years K–9, reports are based on Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
· In Years 10–12, reports are based on Individual Transition Plans (ITPs)
These documents guide personalised learning and ensure strong collaboration between families and staff.
Exiting Karonga School
In Year 11, families are supported to begin planning for a successful transition beyond school, with exit occurring at the end of Term 3, consistent with mainstream timelines.
Research and best practice indicates that gradual exposure to post-school settings supports successful transitions. As such, Year 12 students are supported to progressively increase their engagement in their chosen post-school day program/s, typically following this structure:
· One day per week in Term 1
· Two days per week in Term 2
· Three days per week in Term 3
· In Term 4, Karonga School continues to provide support through flexible, distance-based engagement. Staff may also be released, where appropriate, to support students directly in their new settings. Ongoing communication is maintained via email, phone, and shared digital platforms to ensure continuity and connection.
